Choosing between tile and shingle is one of the biggest decisions an Arizona homeowner makes. Here's an honest comparison.
Lifespan Concrete and clay tiles can last 50+ years, but the underlayment beneath them typically needs replacing every 20–25 years in Arizona heat. Architectural asphalt shingles usually last 15–25 years here, since intense UV speeds up granule loss.
Upfront cost Shingle roofs cost less to install. Tile costs more upfront but often wins over the full life of the home.
Heat performance Tile creates an air gap that helps reduce heat transfer into the attic. Cool-rated "reflective" shingles narrow the gap.
Weight Tile is heavy. Switching from shingle to tile may require a structural check.
Our take For long-term homeowners in Phoenix, Tucson and the Valley, tile is often the better value. For budget-focused projects or homes not built for tile weight, quality architectural shingles are a strong choice.
